~ Weekly Activities ~Mondays:A craft class is held at the center from 10 a.m. to noon each week. We occasionally go on a craft "outing" trip every 5 weeks or so, purchasing more supplies to use for more projects. Along with our trip, we usually go out to lunch also and make a nice day out of it! The wonderful craft items and gifts we make are mostly saved and sold at our annual, "Craft & Bake" sale, held in October. These proceeds go directly back into our craft fund to re-purchase more supplies. Sometimes we donate our hand-made crafts to local Nursing Homes, by passing out one gift to each patient , while saying a little,"hello" to make their day! Our regular crew of Shuffleboard players either meet at the center or The Stonington Community Center, depending on the weather, to play each Monday afternoon from, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday:Occasional Computer Classes are held throughout the year, with The Wheeler High School students donating their time and efforts to teach seniors how to use a computer, starting at a beginners level. When they are held, the classes run on Tuesdays from, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Each senior goes home with a large-print instructional booklet, made by the students. This year, Becky Gillis from North Stonington, will be lead teacher. Please call the center for more information when these classes will be held. The men come in at 1 p.m. and play a hot game of "Pitch" card games. This is open to both genders, and more people are welcome! They finish at 3 p.m. Wednesdays:This is a day held open for our N.S. Golden Agers Luncheons, with mostly "home-made" lunches prepared and cooked by the seniors and myself. The cost for each members meal is only $3.00, and desserts are donated each week by different seniors. After the meal and clean up is done in the kitchen, the seniors enjoy a few fun-packed games of Bingo! The first Wednesday of each month is reserved for the GA Meetings. They are held at 12:30 p.m., and only small refreshments, coffee and teas are served on those days. A VNA nurse frequents the center before the meetings start, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. to do a free, blood-pressure check to any senior. Thursdays:Low-impact exercise classes are held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., with a VNA exercise instructor to lead the way. We have a professional quilter, Susan Stedman who heads the sewing classes, which run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Susan's expertise in the fields of quilting, sewing embroidery and more make this a fun day at the center. At 3:15 p.m. to 4 p.m., we have our fabulous arthritic Tai Chi instructor, Gary Donovan share his teachings and techniques of Tai Chi. This is one of our newest classes held at the center, which is becoming more and more popular with seniors reporting the great health benefits they are receiving from this type of exercise. Fridays:Our very own local artist, Susan Stafford holds her art classes from 10 a.m. to noon, teaching and assisting seniors with their paintings. There are occasional instructional classes held on Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. You may call the senior center for inquiries about those dates. Under the guidance of Susan, many of our seniors have participated in the yearly Senior Art Expos, held at The Crystal Mall, winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards! |
